I am back in the Island of Betel Nuts for a week after a 3.5hrs 'OMG-my-Fernari-can-reach-up-to-1xx km/h?!' drive. Just in time for dad's birthday dinner.
What could be better than a week-long break after some frantic rush to complete the never-ending assignments? A week-long break that starts with a fantastic feast of fantastic seafood that is!
Far from civilisation and in a village which the name translates "FriendStone", the place is not even what you would call a restaurant. It's more like a humble open air shack with some neons, fluorescent tubes, a TV set hanging from the ceiling, a dog napping on its paws nearby. But the food is simply worth dying-resuscitated-then-dying-again for, seriously.
Beehoon was nicely done with just the appropriate moisture and saltiness to kick start one's appetite. Then, it was the cockles in lime and rice wine that was fresh, succulent and subtly tangy with a hint of chinese rice wine - best 'lala' dish so far in my life. Vege, while nothing much to shout for, has an interesting extra ingredient in fried 'foo chok' (bean curd sticks) that adds some crunchiness texture to the dish.
Oyster omelette or 'o chen' was incredibly addictive. Instead of the usual glue-ish and starchy version which you can find in most part of PG, it was done in a fritters/omelette sort of way, making it uniquely crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The fifth dish - steamed garoupa was very flavourful thanks to the salted vege and sour plum combo yet the sweetness and freshness of the fish was not overwhelmed. Then came the blockbuster - sweet and spicy flower crab . Sweet, spicy and truly finger-sucking-good. Enough said. Dinner ended with a mooncake courtesy of the neighbourhood-friendly martian, yummy...
Bill came at just over RM100 for 6 persons (dad, mum, sis, grandpa, grandma, me and a martian) . How can you beat that?
Dead tired now. Need to recharge. But 1st, need to find something to eat....the posted photos have backfired. Damn!
